A root canal is a dental procedure we use to treat infection at the center of a tooth, which is also known as the pulp. You can think of it as a rescue mission to save a tooth that's badly decayed or infected.
The name "root canal" comes from the process of cleaning the canals inside the tooth's root. During the procedure, we remove the damaged area of the tooth (the pulp), clean and disinfect it, then fill and seal it. The treatment is carried out under local anesthesia, so it’s generally painless and no more uncomfortable than getting a filling.
Root canals are needed for a variety of reasons, but the most common is an infection caused by severe tooth decay. Other reasons can include a cracked or damaged tooth, a deep filling, or trauma to the tooth.
The root canal procedure usually involves one to three visits to the dental office. During the first visit, we'll take an X-ray to see the shape of the root canals and check for signs of infection. Then, we'll use a drill to access the inside of the tooth and special tools to remove the pulp and clean the root canal. The cleaned canal is then filled with a material called gutta-percha and sealed with dental cement.
Finally, to protect the tooth and restore it to full function, we often place a crown on top. The crown not only improves the appearance of the tooth but also gives it extra strength and protection. After a root canal treatment, the tooth should continue to function normally for years, even decades to come. It's crucial to maintain good oral hygiene practices, including regular brushing and flossing, and routine dental check-ups, to ensure the treated tooth and surrounding teeth remain healthy.
A root canal is a highly effective way to preserve a tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted. With this treatment, you can continue to smile, chew, and enjoy all your favorite foods with confidence!
