A dental crown, often thought of as a "cap" for your tooth, is a solution we use to restore the shape, size, and function of your tooth. Imagine it as a helmet for your tooth, protecting it from further damage and enhancing its appearance.
Crowns are usually made from various materials such as porcelain, ceramic, metal, or even a combination of these. The material we choose often depends on the location of the tooth, your personal preference, and the aesthetic considerations.
Crowns are a great solution for a variety of dental problems. If you have a tooth that's severely worn down, cracked, weak, or has a large filling, a crown could be the best choice. It's also frequently used to cover a dental implant or a tooth that's been treated with a root canal.
The process of getting a crown usually involves two visits to the dental office. During the first visit, we'll prepare your tooth by removing its outer portion and any decay present. We'll then take a digital impression with our intraoral scanner of the prepared tooth and the surrounding teeth, which will be used to custom-make your crown. While your crown is being made, you'll have a temporary crown to protect the prepared tooth.
On your second visit, we'll remove the temporary crown and cement the permanent one into place, ensuring it fits correctly and matches the rest of your teeth.
Just like your natural teeth, a well-cared-for crown can last many years. Regular brushing, flossing, and routine dental check-ups will help maintain your crown and overall oral health. With a crown, you can confidently eat, smile, and enjoy life without worrying about your tooth!
